A Long-overdue Update and My New Project!
It has been a year since I last posted on Escaping Dodge and I apologize for disappearing for so long. This post will update you on what I’ve been up to and reveal a new project I’ve been working on. But first…
I lost my beautiful mother
As many of you know, my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer early in 2014. I wrote about that here. I spent the majority of 2014 with mom going to doctor appointments and getting tests. She ultimately chose to receive no treatments so we focused on keeping her comfortable and having fun.
We lost mom on February 23, 2015.
With the help of family and the amazing team at Hope Hospice, mom was able to live out her remaining days in her own home. I held her hand as she took her final breath. To say I miss her would be a huge understatement. We grew so close over the last year of her life. I wouldn’t trade one minute I spent with her for all the riches on the plant.
After mom passed, I built a memorial site so family and friends could share stories, pictures and emotions. It was my way of keeping mom alive and I enjoy looking at it still today.
Working helped me through
During all this I was trying my hand at selling on Amazon the products I found using the “retail arbitrage” method. It was something new to learn that was positive for my mind and mom loved going with me on shopping excursions. It was something fun for us both to do.
I’d push her around in the wheelchair. She would scour the lower half of the shelves while I focused on the upper half. It was so fun to find things that seemed like a good bargain. I wrote about my experience selling on Amazon in the Income Labs posts.
Private labeling emerged as a better fit
While retail arbitrage was fun, there were a lot of things about that model I didn’t like. For example, once your inventory was gone it was unlikely you could replenish it at the same low price.
I tried my hand at private labeling products under my own brand: My Beer Cozy. I could see the advantages in this model and worked harder at that plan. I added designs, created a website and learned about Amazon’s advertising.
This is a much better fit for me and one I’m passionate about. So, I’m back…
The new project
I noticed over this last year that despite not posting I was still getting email subscribers on the Escaping Dodge list. I’m certain it’s because of the posts I wrote about selling on Amazon. How do I know? I know because readers were clicking through on the links on my resources page and purchasing the items I recommend (thank you!).
Given that insight and my commitment to building a business through private labeling, I’m launching a new blog at PrivateLabelPreneur.com and it went live today!
So what about Escaping Dodge?
I still have a love for the subject of personal finance. In fact, I’m finding new challenges being self-employed so the subject is still near and dear to my heart!
Escaping Dodge will remain up and I plan to post here from time-to-time. But, my focus will be on PrivateLabelPreneur.com and building my own business private labeling products for sale via eCommerce.
